1. What is a domain name?

To be simple, a domain name is the same as a telephone number on the Internet. People can find out your website using the domain name. But in technical term, a domain name is a way to identify and locate computers connected to the Internet. Resources on the Internet such as web sites, mail and ftp servers have an IP address which is number(like 301.88.88.301). Such IP address numbers are not easy for people to remember. But domain names provide a text readable name to the resources on the Internet which can be easily understood by human beings and that's why Domain Name System (DNS) is used to translate between domain names and IP addresses.

2. Why do I need my own domain name?

The main reason is that you can set up a website and show it to the world. For personal interest, you can share your things with other people and get feedback from them. For business purpose, you can improve your company image by having company name-like Internet contact. It is easier for people to remember and reach your company home page. The other reason is that when you have your own domain name, you can change your ISP or webhost without needing to change your domain name. Your domain name is portable. Also, domain name is registered on a first-come-first serve basic. You can prevent others from using the same domain name. Even if you don't yet have a website ready to publish on the web, you can reserve the name now and setup the website later.

7. What should I do if I want to transfer a domain name from other ISP/hosting company?

You should keep the service at your present host while waiting for InterNIC to complete the transfer. When InterNIC receives the template, they will generate an acknowledge request and send it to the current administrative contact of the domain. After updating the DNS (Domain Name System) database, you should contact the previous host to delete your old domain from their records and update their DNS records.

Domain forwarding allows clients to forward one web address to another web address or IP location. For example, if you have two domains, one is mydomainA.com and the other is mydomainB.com and would like them to get access to the same website. Sub-domain, technically called Canonical Domain or c-name for short, works the same as a regular domain name. But you needn't pay for the yearly renewal fee and you can't transfer the sub-domain to other people.
